I am Police Sergeant Michele Birch, currently working as the police supervisor on the Birmingham Restorative Justice Service. I have been a police officer for over 23 years and have enjoyed a variety of roles within the Police however I must admit to this being my absolute favourite of them all! I initially joined the team as a co-ordinator and so I learnt Restorative Justice conferencing from scratch over 3 years ago and fell in love with the power of RJ within a couple of months being on the team. I have truly never seen any tool that we have within the Criminal Justice system that gives a victim as much satisfaction, or an offender such empathy for their victim. I genuinely know that RJ can change lives and have seen this happen before my eyes on a number of occasions over the years.
I am immensely proud of my team and the partnership that we have with Birmingham Social Housing Partnership means that we can prevent duplication amongst the various services such as Environmental Health, Housing and Police and one organisation can deal with a case on behalf of all three. The partnership goes from strength to strength and we are still developing our service to incorporate other criminal justice agencies in order to improve the service offered to victims of crime and ASB.
